Greetings Booklovers!
Hello Dear Readers and Friends,
Sometimes people ask why I write historicals. I could say it’s because I enjoy reading and writing about times when the roles of men and women were clear: when men were men and women were women. But, honestly, it’s more complicate than that.
Like most readers (Yes, writers are readers. It’s the other half of our job), I read because I like words, stories, and most of all, to escape. Don’t get me wrong. I live a normal life with a loving husband and a sweet dog in a comfortable home in a friendly neighborhood in a delightful community. We have a lovely daughter and son-in-law. I get along fine with my mom and sister. I have a number of good friends. It’s just that sometimes life is so—daily. The ceaseless bills, the crowded parking lots, the dentist appointments, the mud on the carpet after a rain, a ketchup stain on my favorite white shirt—these are the banes of my day-to-day existence. Nothing serious, and I am grateful for that. But sometimes I want to escape to a world where the mundane is left out.
No brave historical hero or gutsy heroine worries about his or her laundry or finding time to get the car’s oil changed at 50,000 miles. They have important things to deal with: making an appearance in the royal court, saving a lover from the dungeon, or sailing the high seas toward an unknown fate. In their company my ordinary world falls away. I, too, experience adventure and betrayal, forbidden love and thrilling discoveries. When I open a book or boot up the computer, I explore larger conflicts, other locales, extraordinary personalities, deeper emotions, exotic cultures, time periods that may have formed the very circumstances of today’s world.
Sometimes historicals surprise me or thrill me, make me laugh or make me cry, but when the adventure is over, I’m glad to safely return to my ordinary world. Here we have antibiotics, microwave ovens, copy machines, cell phones, airplanes, cars, and ice cream. I find my life richer for understanding how fortunate we are to live in today’s humdrum world. I close the book, or finish my manuscript, refreshed by the temporary escape and often feeling wiser for better understanding the past.
So, dear Reader, escape with me, if you like—if you dare. Discover romance, adventure, and the past. Follow the links to order my books.
Wishing you a Great Escape,
Linda Madl
